What to check before you buy
- Manual: note where the clutch bites (a high bite means a worn clutch) and check every gear, reverse included, goes in cleanly without grinding.
- iMT: a manual gearbox with no clutch pedal, the clutch is worked by an actuator. Check it engages smoothly in stop-start traffic and ask if the clutch has been replaced.
- Torque-converter automatic: shifts should be smooth, with no flare in revs between gears and no delay engaging Drive or Reverse. Ask when the gearbox oil was last changed.
- On a diesel, have the turbo, injectors and (where fitted) the DPF checked, and confirm the timing belt's service history, these are the expensive failures.
- Whatever you pick, it can be inspected before you pay, 300+ checkpoints, a diagnostic scan and a written report per car.
