Used Audi A6: what to check before you buy

What that mileage & age mean
- It's chain-driven, so there's no scheduled belt replacement, but a rattle for a second or two on a cold start points to a stretched chain or tensioner, which is a real bill. Listen on the test drive.
- By this mileage the transmission fluid and spark plugs should already have been replaced. Ask for the bills, not just a verbal yes.
- At around 10 years old, the rubber and electrics matter as much as the engine, perished hoses and bushes, a tired AC compressor, and rust in the sills, wheel arches and boot floor.
Where to look hardest on a Audi A6
- On a diesel, have the turbo, injectors and (where fitted) the DPF checked, and confirm the timing belt's service history, these are the expensive failures.
- With several past owners, read the paperwork chain carefully: every transfer, and the service book, should line up.
- CVT: listen for a whine as speed rises and feel for a surge or slip under acceleration. Ask when the CVT fluid was last changed; these gearboxes depend on it.
- Torque-converter automatic: shifts should be smooth, with no flare in revs between gears and no delay engaging Drive or Reverse. Ask when the gearbox oil was last changed.
- Dual-clutch (DCT): creep in traffic and pull away on a slope on the test drive. A judder or shudder at low speed, or a gearbox warning light, points to clutch-pack wear. Ask whether any clutch or mechatronics work was done under warranty.
- Turbo petrol: watch for blue smoke on a cold start and listen for a whistle or a loss of boost. Regular oil changes matter more on a turbo engine, so read the service record for them.
- 4x4: engage four-wheel drive (and low range, if fitted) on the test drive, and look under the car for dents on the transfer case, differentials and sump.
- Whatever the paperwork says, check the reading on the clock against the service and insurance records, an odometer can be wound back and the dashboard alone won't show it.
