What to check on this one at 78,000 km
- Timing chain, not a belt, so no scheduled change. A rattle for a second on a cold start points to a stretched chain: listen for it.
- At 78,000 km the schedule has already called for: spark plugs. Ask to see the bills.
- On a diesel, have the turbo, the injectors and (where fitted) the DPF checked: those are the expensive failures.
- On an automatic, feel for jerks or slip on a test drive and ask when the transmission fluid was last changed, a rebuild is dear.
