Is the odometer genuine?

Roughly one in three used cars in India has had its odometer wound back. On a digital cluster it takes minutes and leaves no mark on the dial — and every 10,000 km rubbed off can add tens of thousands of rupees to the asking price.

How a rollback shows itself

• A reading well below what the car’s age suggests — the typical used car on sale in Bengaluru reads about 62,000 km; a much lower number for the same year deserves a hard look.
• Wear that doesn’t match the number: a shiny 30,000 km clock over a worn pedal rubber, a polished gearknob, or a sagging driver’s seat.
• Service stamps or an FASTag/insurance history that jump past the current reading.
